  • Hello Everyone,

    This year for our One School, One Book program, we will be reading Path of the Thunderbird by Sara Miller and Pat Toole.  This book should be read as a family over the next 6 weeks.  I am sending home a schedule of chapters to read at the end of this document.  First through fifth grade students have joined a One School, One Book Google Classroom to get background information, discussion questions and additional information.  Have your child log into Google Classroom to access these things. I have included the discussion questions below.


    February 4-9  Chapters 1-4

    February 12-16 Chapters 5-8

    February 19-23  Chapters 9-12

    February 26 -  March 2  Chapters 13-16

    March 5-9  Chapters 17-20

  • Discussion Questions:
  • Why is this book titled Path of the Thunderbird? Is a thunderbird a real or mythological bird?
    2. What was most interesting about the setting of this story?
    3. Did you learn something new about the Grand Canyon from the book?
    4. Have you ever hiked in a National Park or State Park before? What did you find out about
    yourself? Would you like to visit the Grand Canyon or other parks? Why?
    5. How did you feel when you read the book? Excited, Amused, Confused, Bored, Interested.
    What was your favorite part? Why?
    6. What surprised you most about the story?
    7. Did you like that the only one telling the story was Nate? Why or why not?
    8. Were you surprised that the characters were able to deal with the problems they
    encountered? Why or why not?
    9. Do the characters seem real? Which character is the most like you or someone you
    know? How?
    10. Which of the following behaviors do the characters demonstrate and how? Courage,
    Perseverance, Honesty, Loyalty, Kindness, Acceptance, Cooperation, Compassion
    11. Do the main characters learn anything new about themselves by the end of the book? Do
    they change or mature?
    12. Did you like the ending? Were you expecting it to end differently?
    13. Some of the animals in the story are on the threatened or endangered list. How can
    people help them and other flora and fauna in our environment survive?
